Welcome
Welcome to the Friends of Udayan website

The Friends of Udayan have their origins in a journey made to India in 1986 by author Kathryn Spink and her husband John Coo. In the previous year Kathryn had completed the translation from French into English of Dominique Lapierre’s international bestseller “City of Joy”, in which he made reference to Udayan and its founder James Stevens. Part of the proceeds from “The City of Joy” had gone to support the home which was struggling financially. Following their visit to Udayan Kathryn and John began informally raising funds for it amongst their friends in England.
In February 1996 Friends of Udayan was more formally established and since then has generated considerable sums both for the upkeep of Udayan and for specific projects including the acquisitions of a school bus and bunk beds.

This newly established website will carry news of Friends’ activities as well as updates from Udayan and photographs of the children.
